Samsung Secure Folder data is stored locally in a protected area on the Galaxy phone or tablet, isolated by Samsung Knox and secured by the folder’s own PIN, password, pattern, or supported biometric method. It is not a normal folder you can browse from a computer, and it is not automatically a cloud folder. Samsung states that Secure Folder can be accessed only on the phone or tablet.
Where Secure Folder Files Actually Live
Files and app data in Secure Folder remain on the compatible Galaxy device inside the Secure Folder environment. Samsung describes this as a private space protected with a special passcode. Although files can be moved into it from internal storage or an SD card, they are no longer exposed as ordinary files in the original location.
Avoid relying on claims that Secure Folder is simply a visible “separate partition.” Samsung does not provide a user-facing filesystem path for browsing the protected content. Its practical security boundary is the Knox-protected container and Secure Folder authentication.
Can Secure Folder Be Opened from a Computer?
No. Samsung’s current support documentation says Secure Folder can be accessed only on the phone or tablet, not from the web or a computer. USB file browsing should not expose its protected files as a normal folder.
To use a file elsewhere, open Secure Folder, authenticate, select the file in My Files, and use Move out of Secure Folder. A file that originally came from an SD card may be placed in the device’s internal storage when moved out.
Internal Storage, SD Cards, and Cloud Files
- Internal storage: files saved on the phone can be moved into Secure Folder.
- SD card: supported files on an SD card can be moved into Secure Folder, but moving them back out may place them in internal storage.
- Cloud-only files: Samsung says files saved only in a cloud account cannot be moved directly into Secure Folder. Download them to the device first if appropriate.
- Cloud backup: new Secure Folder backups are no longer supported. Some older backups may still be restorable.
How to Set Up Secure Folder
- Open Settings.
- Go to Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder.
- Continue through the permissions and Samsung Account prompts.
- Create a PIN, password, or pattern. Enable Reset with Samsung account only if you want the supported recovery option.

Backup, Restore, and Transfer Limits
Samsung no longer supports creating new Secure Folder cloud backups. Current devices may still restore data from an older compatible backup. For a new Galaxy device, Samsung documents Secure Folder transfer through Smart Switch: connect the devices, select Secure Folder or specific Secure Folder content on the receiving device, transfer it, and verify the result before erasing the old phone.
Compatibility can vary, so keep the old device unchanged until the transferred apps and files have been checked. Apps inside Secure Folder may need to be signed in or configured again.
What Happens If You Uninstall Secure Folder?
Uninstalling Secure Folder can remove its contents. Samsung offers an option to move media files out during uninstall, but you should review the confirmation screen carefully and verify important files first. If access is lost and Reset with Samsung account was not enabled, Samsung says the existing folder cannot be unlocked; the available path is to remove it and create a new one.
