Q1. Why do I need to protect my files & folders?


Files and folders need to be protected so that other PC users like home / casual users, co-workers and friends cannot access (read, view, copy, move or delete) your files without permission (password). Files left unprotected can lead to theft, data leaks and breaches of privacy. This can cost you money, lost time and inconvenience, even your job. Folder Lock not only protects files from unauthorized users but also safeguards them from viruses, trojans, worms, spywares, malwares and from network computers and hackers who may try to steal your files when you connect to the Internet. It also prevents illegal copy or duplication of your material.

 


Q2. How to Lock Files, Folders and Drives?


Folder Lock gives a 'Lock' feature to suit the needs of people who prefer convenience and speed. It is ideal for people who are oblivious and those who are password protecting their files from casual, non-technical users.


You can lock files, folders and even drives using Folder Lock. To lock, click 'Lock' tab on top after entering the password and then click 'Lock files, folders and drives' button on the left side. Add items to your locker either by dragging and dropping them from the folder tree, or by clicking the 'Add' button after selecting a file or folder. Once you're done, click 'Lock Now' and the items will be locked and hidden simultaneously.


You can check / uncheck each locked item to enable / disable locking protection. You can remove an item in this list by right-clicking it and selecting "Remove From List". Furthermore, you can multi-select as many items as you want and enable / disable their protection or remove them from list as per your need. This helps you maintain your favorite locking list and you can keep some items disabled and enable them later.


Please note that the locking list you maintain is specific to your Locker. It is not universal; it was designed to profile each Locker as a separate User. If you can't find an item you locked in a particular Locker, then maybe you locked that item by logging into a different Locker and are trying to access it through another.


You can also lock programs (.exe) anywhere on your computer or in your program files folder, like Outlook Express and other such programs that keeps data personal to you.

 


Q3. How to Encrypt Files & Folders?


Either you create a ‘New’ Locker or ‘Open’ an existing one; you login into ‘Encrypt’ Screen. Here you can click ‘Add Files and Folders’ button and start dragging and dropping files and folders in the Locker or click the ‘Add' button to transfer your files in the Locker.


You can choose a transfer method i.e. whether you wish to move, copy or move after shredding the original files in Options > General Settings > Transfer Method option. Use ‘Move Items’ if you wish to transfer your files and folders to the Locker otherwise use ‘Leave a Copy’ if you wish to keep a copy at the original location. Furthermore, you can set the option to always secure delete (shred) your files. This can be done by choosing "Move after Shredding" from the General Settings.


When you add your files and folders in the Locker and click ‘Encrypt Now!” button, this will create an encrypted Locker and move / copy your selected files and folders in it.


When you’ve done adding your data, click the ‘Close to Protect’ button and all your data will be encrypted using 256-bit AES On-the-fly Encryption.


A good feature of Folder Lock is that it allows you to increase the size of the Locker in run-time, so that if you need to add more space, you can do so by using Edit My Locker > Increase Locker Size option. You can also click the Magnified on the right hand corner to be able to see your encrypted drive in Windows Explorer, where you can manage your files better.


Next time, whenever you log in, you’ll need the locker path and the correct password to get to your files. No one, except for the person who knows the password can access your encrypted files and folders.

 


Q4. How secure are my files?


With Folder Lock encryption option, secret files are highly secure. If you want unbreakable encryption for your files, you can choose to 'Encrypt' files. It uses 256-bit AES On-the-fly Encryption which is the most secure method to protect sensitive files. No matter if you move your files to other computers or a different operating system, your 'Encrypted' files will remain protected. However, when you choose to lock files, the program locks your files in only that Operating System.

 


Q5. How to protect files on other drives like D: E: F: etc. not just C:?


To protect files on other drive partitions of your hard disk, select 'Lock' tab from top, and then click 'Add files and Folders' to select files and folders you wish to lock from the folder tree in the left pane and click 'Add', these files will be locked on the location where they exist. You can also 'Lock' the whole partition(s) except the one where your operating system is installed.

 


Q6. How to password protect USB Flash Drive/portable drives?


Password protecting a portable device is a snap with Folder Lock. All you need to do is copy your Locker to the USB drive, Memory Stick or External Drive, wherever you want your Locker to go.


If you would like to move your Locker rather than keeping a copy on your hard drive, you need to log in with correct password for that Locker and then click 'Edit My Locker' in the left pane and click the 'Move Locker' button. Since Folder Lock doesn't allow deletion of Lockers, you can't move your Lockers directly without entering the password. Once you enter the password, you can always click the 'Edit My Locker' button to move, delete or rename your locker.


To access your private files and folders kept in the Locker, you will need to install Folder Lock in the computer where you wish to access them. We suggest you keep a Folder Lock setup file in your portable device and install Folder Lock anytime you need to open your Locker on another computer.


On a computer where Folder Lock is installed, you can simply plug in the USB Drive and double click the Locker or browse the Locker Path and enter your password to get full access to your files and folders protected inside the Locker.

 


Q7. How to Secure data in your CD/DVD-RWs?


To protect / encrypt your files in CD/DVD, all you'll need to do is copy the Locker to your CD/DVD-RW device. This you can do by simply dragging and dropping the already created Locker in the CD/DVD drive and click 'Write Files' in Windows XP/Vista. You can also use the Windows Explorer right-click 'Send To...' and then select CD/DVD-RW after right clicking the locker file.


If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows that do not come with this feature, you can use a CD-RW/DVD-RW burning software like Nero, to copy the Locker file with .flk extension to your writeable CD or DVD. Make sure your Locker is closed while you are burning your locker file. You can access these files directly from your CD or DVD by using Folder Lock and providing the correct password without the need of copying it to your computer later.


Please note that it is a must that you create your Locker on your hard drive first, and then burn it on your CD/DVD, since you cannot create a Locker in CD/DVD-RW directly. You can use CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs to perform this task. This way you can always keep a secure backup of your encrypted files and folders in a CD/DVD.

 


Q8. Can I transfer my Locker via email / file transfer?


You can send your encrypted data through email by simply attaching the Locker containing your encrypted data, just as you do it with any other file. If you are using a web based Email service, login to your email service, open your email and go to the attach files option and click browse and select the Locker file you wish to send. Your files and folders inside Locker will remain protected. You can access them by downloading the attached file on any computer and open it using Folder Lock.


Please note that if you're sending the Locker to someone else, always make sure to send the password to decrypt it through another email, phone or by another means. Never send the Locker and the password in the same email, otherwise what's the use of encrypting something when password can be breached by in-the-middle hackers.


Apart from emailing Lockers, you can also upload Lockers in web-based interface or send them via the messenger's file transfers. You can also keep a backup of these Lockers in your email, myspace or even to your own webserver. No one will be able to decrypt these files without the correct password therefore you can feel safe keeping an online backup as well.

 


Q9. Are my locked files also protected from network computers?


Folder Lock protects your data from computers that are networked with your computer, a useful feature to protect private files from network users or your network administrator. You can share protected folders from inside the Locker; these folders will be accessible only when your Locker is open.

 


Q10. Are files protected from viruses, trojans, worms, spyware etc?


Yes. There is no way these types of programs can do any damage to your protected files.

 


Q11. Are files protected from hackers when I am on the internet?


Yes. Hackers or Script Kiddies can't access your secured files even if they break through to your computer, which means total peace of mind on and off the net.

 


Q12. Is there any limit to the number of files or folders I can protect?


There is no limit to the files that can be Locked and Encrypted in the registered version. However, evaluation users cannot create a locker of more than ¼ of the size of the partition or 4 GB (whichever is greater).

 


Q13. Can I protect any format of files?


Yes, you can protect any format of file with Folder Lock. It doesn't matter whether your files are in .jpg, .doc, .pdf, .txt, .bmp, .gif, .html, .psd or any other format.

 


Q14. Does it work on all file systems like FAT16, FAT32, NTFS?


Yes. Folder Lock has no compatibility issues running on any type of file system including FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS.

 


Q15. Can I use NDD, ScanDisk, Defragmenters or other disk tools?


Sure, why not? Folder Lock allows you to use any kind of disk utility without any problem.

 


Q16. Someone deleted Folder Lock program folder or program EXE? What do I do now?


No problem. Just run the Folder Lock setup again, install the program and start using the program once again. If you're already registered, your registration would still work as before.

 


Q17. Is it possible to Encrypt some files and Lock the others?


Yes, it's possible. You can choose to Encrypt some files and Lock the others. This is useful if you have some casual files to Lock as well as some highly confidential files that you need to Encrypt.

 


Q18. Are these Lockers undeletable?


Lockers are undeletable on the computer where Folder Lock is installed; they are locked and totally inaccessible. The only way to delete 'Locker' is by opening it using correct password and then delete it from 'Edit My Locker' option.

 


Q19. Can I do backups of my files?


Yes you can take regular backups using window backup or any other backup utility.

 


Q20. Will my files remain protected if I boot computer with a bootable disk?


Yes. Whether you boot your computer with a bootable disk or load it in safe mode or DOS mode, encrypted files will remain protected and secure.

 


Q21. How to change the password?


Run Folder Lock program; select the locker you want to change the password for. Enter correct password to open the locker either click 'Options' go to 'General 'Settings' and click 'Change password' or click the 'Edit My Locker' button on the left side of the screen. After entering you current password, set and confirm the new password.

 


Q22. How to uninstall the program?


Folder Lock can only be uninstalled by clicking the 'Uninstall Program' button, which you can access after clicking the Options button in the 'General settings'. You cannot uninstall the program directly without entering the password. This is done to protect the program from being uninstalled by other users. Do not try to delete the program manually. Use only this option to remove the program from your computer.

 


Q23. Can it be removed from taskbar and show in system tray?


Yes, you can remove the program from taskbar and instead force it to sit in your system tray. Click the Options button after entering the correct password. Then click the 'general settings, and deselect the 'Show in Taskbar checkbox'. You can also remove the program from the system tray and show it in the taskbar if your system tray is too crowded.

 


Q24. I don't want others to know that I use Folder Lock, can I do that?


Yes. For complete privacy, we suggest you use Stealth Mode feature after entering the correct password and clicking 'Options'. Here you can select the level of stealth you want for the program. Here if you activate full stealth, the program folder of Folder Lock, Add/Remove programs item, context menu in Explorer and Shortcuts on Desktop, Quick Launch and Start Menu will get invisible.

 


Q25. What is stealth mode?


By enabling stealth mode, you can hide all the traces of Folder Lock from your computer, from Desktop, Start menu, quick launch and Add/Remove programs and even from the program files/ install location. To enable stealth mode, run Folder Lock, go to options, click stealth mode and check the 'Stealth Mode on/off' Box. The only way to access Folder Lock after enabling 'Stealth Mode' is by using Hotkey.

 


Q26. How Can I run Folder Lock after enabling stealth mode?


You can run Folder Lock with the use of a hotkey. After enabling stealth mode, you will be given an option to select your hotkey. Pressing CTRL+ALT+Shift+'YourKey' will launch Folder Lock anytime you want. You can choose 'YourKey' from the Stealth Mode option.

 


Q27. My hotkey runs another program or doesn't run anything at all? How do I run Folder Lock?


Sometimes, hotkey you use are already in use by another program and therefore can conflict with Folder Lock's hotkey in Stealth conditions. The best solution to recover the program under the circumstances is to install Folder Lock again to recover lost Start Menu and Desktop Icons. You can also click 'Start > Run' or press windows+R and enter the path to the Folder Lock.exe which is by default 'C:\Program Files\Folder Lock 6\Folder Lock.exe' to execute Folder Lock under the circumstances. You can then disable the Stealth Mode or choose another Hotkey Character for your use.

 


Q28. Can I close my Locker after a certain time of mouse inactivity or time?


Sure you can, run Folder Lock select the locker, enter correct password to open it. Click options and then go to 'Auto Protect'. Check the 'Auto Protection' box and set the idle time by moving the slider, so that Folder Lock closes your Locker after that time. You can select this option either for one time only or if you always want your Locker to be closed after a certain period of time select 'Always Remember'. This feature is useful for those who get away from their computers and fear theft in their absence.

 


Q29. How can I erase the evidence/tracks of my PC activities?


Folder Lock erases tracks like Recent Document History, Find file and folder history and clipboard data. To enable erasing, go to 'Options' click 'History Cleaning' and check the 'Erase Tracks' to erase all the evidence.

 


Q30. Can I increase the size of locker to include more files and folders?


You can increase the size of Locker by simply using the Edit my Locker > Increase Locker Size option. Folder Lock increases the size of Locker when your Locker space is full. This feature alone makes it one of the most convenient encryption software in the world.

 


Q31. I have forgotten my password, how can I get my files back?


SORRY!! THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO ACCESS YOUR LOCKER IF YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN YOUR PASSWORD, SO PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU SET A PASSWORD WHICH IS EASY TO REMEMBER FOR YOU AND HARD TO GUESS FOR OTHERS.

 


Q32. How can I disable the sounds that the program makes?


If sounds bother you, simply click the Options button and then deselect the Play Sound checkbox in the general settings.

 


Q33. How to remove tips?


Uncheck the Show Tips checkbox in the Options area.

 


Q34. Can protected files be found in 'search for files and folders'?


No. Whether you use the Lock or Encrypt feature, files can't be found using the 'search for files and folders' once they are protected, which means total privacy.

 


Q35. How can I suggest a new feature for the future releases?

Q36. How safe is the Shredding files feature in Folder Lock?


Folder Lock's Shred Files feature is safe and very secure. Original files shredded cannot be recovered. Caution: Use Shred Files feature only if you're sure you will not forget your password. If you've lost your password, shredded files would be impossible to recover from their original location.

 


Q37. Are there any bugs in the software? How do I report a bug?


No software on earth can claim to be absolutely bug-free. If you find a bug, please email us at our contact page. Send us the error code or error number and tell us what you were doing when it happened. If it's a "blue screen of death," then let us know its error number or send us the dump file. If the bug seems caused by installation of a new application, let us know the name of it. We're striving for the perfect program and we will really appreciate your help!

Q38. Where can I get the old version of Folder Lock?


Folder Lock 5 is discontinued, however if you wish to recover your Locker files and have lost your old version, please download the old version from here and then install the old version in the same program folder as before. Enter the correct password and your files and folders will be unlocked / decrypted. You can then uninstall the old version and install Folder Lock 6 to keep your files and folders in the Locker it creates.

 


Q39. I've locked / encrypted files using Folder Lock 5, how do I get them back?


You cannot use Folder Lock 6 to unlock / decrypt files protected with Folder Lock 5, please download the old version from here and then install the old version in the same program folder as before. Enter the correct password and your files and folders will be unlocked / decrypted. You can then uninstall the old version and install Folder Lock 6 to keep your files and folders in the Locker it creates.

 


Q40. I lost my Locker files in the old version, can I use the new version to get them back?


If you've lost your files in the old version, the best way to get your locked files back is to install the old version again in the same location where you installed it before, please download the old version from here and enter your password and this will get your files back.

 


Q41. Can I have both version 5 and 6 installed at the same time?


Yes, you can have both the version installed at the same time on your PC, but we would recommend using Folder Lock version 6 because it has improved and advanced features as compare to Folder Lock version 5

Q59. I can translate Folder Lock in my language, can I get full version for doing so?


We currently require German, French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Chinese (Traditional) and Arabic language localization. If you are a qualified translator, editor in a magazine / newspaper or write articles over the internet; you can help us make Folder Lock localized in your language. We do not accept translations from non-qualified as well as translator software. Once you send us your localized work, we send it to qualified translators for verification.
